About
Salt and Copper came about from experimenting with how to create patina on copper in 2024.
While carrying out a campervan conversion , I wanted to add a copper patina splash back and thought I would try creating one.
On small copper sheets I first created a general random effect and I was hooked straightaway with the possibilities.
I wondered if it was possible to control the patina and started trying to create small basic pictures on the copper .
With some success , I kept playing with different methods , products etc.
Once confident I switched to larger pieces of copper foil applied to wood, rather than solid copper sheets and this also worked .
I could have stopped here, but I didn't like the restricted need for solid flat copper as a base and wondered if there was a way to create copper patina on organic shapes.
After many trials I found something that worked well and made the first copper patina table top.
Next was to see if I could still control the patina to create the more detailed artwork , without solid metal sheets .
I could and then I also added Iron into the mix to create rust patina.
The acid test was if others liked what I created as I was not an Artist , more someone with a good eye and a background in working with reclaimed hardwoods .
So I randomly walked into three local Galleries for feedback, two were happy to display my work.
Encouraged by this feedback , I continued playing with the possibilities , and soon sold my first piece.
A copper patina fossil within a rust porthole , created on wood .
So here I am , as Salt And Copper .
I produce my work out of my North Devon based rural workshop , where for the last 13 years I operate a reclaimed hardwood bespoke joinery business Re4med .
This background allows me plenty of stock reclaimed timber material to work with , skills ,and the space to create.
I enjoy the ocean and gain inspiration from my local area in North Devon, so my work reflects this.
The unpredictable nature of working with a living natural finish, means I never know what the end result will be .
This is what draws me to it and keeps me trying new things, I hope it appeals to others .
